The airbrush is a fantastic tool can be used in numerous different arts: going from model making or fashion design, to cake decorating, illustration or even make up.

In this Airbrush buying guide, I will try to answer the following questions for you:

What is the best Airbrush for beginners?

What to look for when buying an airbrush?

Do you want to start airbrushing and you ask yourself what is the best airbrush to start with? For someone starting his or her  journey in airbrushing, I would always recommend the following:

Start with a dual action, gravity feed, internal mix airbrush from the main brand manufacturers like Badger, Iwata, Harder and Steenbeck or Paasche.
Spend as much as your budget allows you. You won’t regret the money invested at the start. It is hard enough to learn how to use an airbrush properly. Cheap material will only make it harder for you. Which lead me to the next question

Are cheap airbrushes worth it?

I want to answer that question as early as possible because I know most beginners are tempted at the idea of getting a cheap airbrush. You can find a lot of different airbrushes on the market, from the very cheap Chinese build airbrush costing only $20, to the great quality built airbrush costing several hundred dollars.

As a beginner, I wouldn’t recommend any of those cheap airbrushes. This is my own point of view and some people would disagree. You can expect the manufacturing quality of those cheap Chinese airbrushes to be very poor at that price. They will clog, leak, have bad trigger action and they will seriously lack of precision. 

The risk is also that those cheap airbrushes will put you off all together from airbrushing. You might spend more time cleaning your airbrush than you would spraying.

In my opinion, I  would would consider them as a waste of money. You are probably going to invest in a good airbrush at one stage anyway, so why not do it at the start? You will end up saving money! If you can’t afford it right now, just wait and save.  Don’t worry, they are some solid build airbrushes under $80, they won’t break the bank.

In the other hand, for beginners, I wouldn’t recommend either a top of the range airbrush either because they have features that wouldn’t be necessary for you at that stage.

What are the different type of airbrush?

They are different types of airbrushes available out there, and each of them would have different characteristics that would suit one or several applications better, but all airbrushes basically obey to the same basic principle:

A flow of compressed air is fed through the tool (airbrush) and will draw the medium (paint, ink of whatever fluid you are using) from its reservoir and atomizes it into very tiny droplets. The moving air is at a lower pressure than static air creating “suction” for the medium (paint).

In this airbrush buying guide, we will to understand the different type of airbrush available and how they operate:

Internal vs  External Mix Airbrush

The difference refers to the way the paint mixes with the air to become atomized.

Internal Mix Airbrush
With an internal mix brush, the paint gets mixed right at the tip of the head assembly inside the cap.
Internal Mix airbrush will produce finer and more soft spray pattern which is excellent for details.
Internal mix airbrush is ideal for detail work.
The paint used need to be thinned properly to avoid clogging..

External Mix Airbrush
With an external mix, the paint gets mixed into the air stream (atomized) from the side thus producing a squished “0” or “D” shaped spray pattern which is a little less consistent and more grainy.
External mix airbrush sprays with a larger dot pattern, more difficult to do fine lines for detail work.
External mix airbrush are ideal  for spraying thick or high viscosity materials, such as acrylics or varnishes.
External mix airbrushes are definitely easier to use and clean than internal mix airbrushes.

External Mix airbrush is your  ideal airbrush if you need to spay a large area without being too concerned about the details.

Single action vs Double Action Airbrush:

Single action vs double action airbrush, this is a question most beginners would ask themselves.Here I will try to answer that question for you. Hopefully this will help you make your choice between a single action airbrush and a double action airbrush.

Single Action Airbrush

They are call single airbrush because by pressing the trigger, it delivers both the air and the paint flow without any possible adjustment.  You can modify the paint flow separately by turning a screw or knob located at the rear of the airbrush that will adjust the needle position in the nozzle.

Single action airbrushes are usually used to paint large area, rather fine details. For instance they would suit very well if you need to for with stencils or masking.
Would suit least experienced users or beginners that would require less adjustment options. Even children can use those airbrushes as they are much easier to control that the double action airbrushes.
Single action airbrush are usually cheaper than the double action airbrush. So if you are not planning to work on fine details and you have a pretty tight budget, this could be the way to go for you.

Double action airbrush:

Double action airbrushes  are probably the most widely used airbrushes out there. They are more precise airbrush, ideal for art painting for instance. They allow much more control and are much more precise than the single action airbrushes. The airflow is controlled by pressing the airbrush trigger and the paint flow is controlled by pulling the same trigger back. The more you pull the trigger back, the bigger the paint flow is, making the spray pattern wider.

Yes it is great to be able to control both airflow and paint flow, but it makes double action airbrushes more difficult to use than single action airbrushe
You will need a certain amount of practice before you can master it.
Double action airbrushes are usually more expensive than single action airbrushes.
But I would say it is well worth the money as you have a tool that will allow you to produce fantastic details work.

Gravity feed vs siphon Feed airbrush?

Siphon Feed airbrush:

You can recognize those type of airbrushed with their bottle or container located generally at the bottom or on the side of the airbrush. As the air is going through the airbrush, the paint is pulled up by a vacuum into the airbrush towards the nozzle to be atomized.

The bottle on those airbrushes is larger than gravity feed airbrushes so they be useful if you have to pain larger surface without having to refill the bottle. They are also fitted with larger nozzle than those fitted on gravity feed airbrushes.

Also colour swapping is making easier with siphon feed airbrushes as it is very easy to just interchange bottle of different colour paint. You could potentially have few bottles of different colours ready to be used and also a bottle of cleaner you can use in between colour changes.

All of those above characteristic make the siphon feed airbrushes more suited for users that want to paint large area.

Artists that paint on T-Shirt or work on airbrushed Tattoos,  culinary art Painting often use those kind of siphon feed airbrushes.

Gravity feed airbrush:

Gravity feed airbrush are generally used by airbrush users that want to do fine detail work. They draw the paint down from a cup located at the top of the airbrush.

Gravity feed airbrush allow users to work with lower air pressure than bottom feed airbrush. That subsequently will give you more control on the way you move you hand and spray on the support
They are in a way more economical than siphon feed airbrush. When you spray, you will use every single drop of paint in the cup. It is easier to pull down the paint from cup than to pull it up from the bottle of a bottom feed airbrush..
So it is the ideal airbrush when you need to work on details with a small quantity of paint in the cup.

Which nozzle size and what needle to choose for my airbrush?

The nozzles and needles are very fragile. Therefore it is better to a spare one in stock as they can easily be bend or damaged if you drop the airbrush or during the maintenance. Make sure to choose an airbrush for which you can find spare parts. You will definitely have to replace either a nozzles or a needles at some stage. Check out the price for those parts also as you might need to replace them more frequently that you think.

It is easy to get spare parts for Airbrushes manufactured by well known brand like Iwata, Badger, Paasche etc, but you wont be so lucky with cheap Chinese airbrushes. That’s one of the reason I stay clear from them personally.

What size nozzle is best for airbrushing?

I will depends again of what use you are going to have with the airbrush.

Fine nozzle for Airbrush:
he finer the nozzle\needle assembly is, the finer the spray is going to be, the more details you are going to be able to achieve with your airbrush. But also the less suited for spraying large area.
The finer the nozzle\needle assembly is, the finer the paint you will use will have to be adapted (finer pigmented), and the less your compressed air requirements will be.

Larger nozzle for Airbrush:
The wider the nozzle\needle assembly is, the more freedom you will have in choosing the type of paint to be sprayed and the greater your need for compressed air will be.
The finer the nozzle\needle assembly is, the finer the paint you will use will have to be adapted (finer pigmented), and the less your compressed air requirements will be.

So it is hard to answer the above question, the choice of the nozzle\needle assembly will really depends on what you are going to do with it.To make it easier, some airbrush like the Badger SOTAR 20/20 comes with a set of different nozzle\needle.

For me, 0.4mm is a good compromise to get started. Starting with a 0.15mm / 0.2mm needle is complicated: the nozzle and needle are very fine and can get clogged easily, and you may spend much more time cleaning the airbrush than painting.

Best Airbrush for Beginners :What airbrush to buy?

I gave you already quite a bit of information in there but if you are still unsure, there is few more thing that you can also consider before making your choice to buy an airbrush.

If you are into fine art paint, Illustrating or want to paint plastic models, you really to have a maximum control over the amount paint and air you spray. Double action airbrushes will suit you better.

Airbrush Nozzle

You can find double action airbrushes with different size on nozzle\needle out there: 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.4 mm, o.5 mm, 0.6 mm …..I already cover that in the previous paragraph.

If you need to work on large area, you will want to choose an airbrush with a large nozzle (0.5 mm or more). If you need to paint fine details, thin line, then obviously you will require a finer nozzle.

You can have a type of airbrush for a particular type of job. However, you can find some airbrush out there that have an interchangeable nozzle system. That will allow to do several type of jobs with the same airbrush (like the Iwata-Medea Eclipse HP CS). This will give you a lot of flexibility. You could spray background with a set of nozzle and then swap the nozzle\needle\cap for a thinner one do work on the details.

Stop set trigger control:

Another element I wanted to mention is the stop set trigger control. You can find on some dual action airbrush like the Badger Renegade range. It is also called “speed dial” on the Harder and Steenbeck Infinity airbrush for instance.

This will allow you set how far the needle can go back when you pull the trigger, to restrict the amount of paint that can get atomized. Handy when you want to spray even size lines. Although this feature might not be necessarily a must for the pro, it is a nice safety net to have for a beginner.

Airbrush price:

I already cover why I don’t recommend cheap, low quality airbrushes on the first section of this post.But I want to say it again. There are some airbrush manufacturers out there who produce very cheap, low quality airbrushes, with non-existent spare parts. I would stay clear from those airbrushes. They are designed to be used only a few times before they usually fail to function correctly.

So don’t buy a $30  airbrush but try to invest a bit more money if you can. You won’t regret it. You can find a very good airbrush for $150.

Those manufacturer produce reliable, high quality products, with high quality materials. The all have a wide range of spare parts and accessories for their airbrushes. It is very important as you will soon discover!

Simplicity of disassembly / reassembly:

This is also an important factor because at the beginning, you will  spends a lot of time cleaning your airbrush.

If you are reading this post it means that you’ve   already chosen the compressor as your air source.

You can find a compressor with tank, without tanks, some of them silent other rather noisy. Low-pressure air compressors (150 psi or less), Medium-pressure air compressors (151 psi to 1000 psi) or even high-pressure air compressors (more than 1000 psi). Airbrush compressor would fit in the “low-pressure air compressor “category.

So if you are going to use your compressor with an airbrush, I will assume that you will want to stay away from the “general purpose” medium-pressure air compressor that you can find at your local hardware. They are very noisy, can deliver generally more pressure that you would need with an airbrush and also can take a good bit of space. Saying that, those compressors are all equipped with an air regulator, and you could adjust the air pressure down to be able to work with an airbrush.

Like the choice for an airbrush, the choice the compressor will depend really on the type of work you are going to do with it. Different artists would have different needs.

    Overall this a s a very well made compressor, compact and lightweight with a very sturdy outer metal case with non-slip feet, that has an handle for easy transport.

    What you need to know about  Airbrush compressors

    Before I start with this guide I wanted to mention few things that you need to consider before buying a compressor:

    How much power for the airbrush compressor?

    The number of watts consumed, generally about 150 or200 w

    What is the flow rate of an airbrush compressor (Airflow) ?

    The airflow, or the quantity of air that the compressor can deliver, is be measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute) or lpm (litre per minute). Most of them would have an air flow capacity between 20 and 50 lpm (0.70 to 1.76 CFM).

    What is the Maximum working pressure of an airbrush compressor ?

    It will indicate air pressure the compressor can reach; usually measured in PSI (pound per inch) or bar. Make sure the compressor you are interested in buying will provide enough air pressure for the application. Spraying on T-shirt will require more pressure than spraying on nail or body.

    What is the capacity of the tank?

    AC 196

    A compressor tank eliminates any pulsing and cools the air so the moisture separator will work better.

    Although some small compressors have no tank, when they do have one, most of them have a capacity between  0,4 l – 1 l – 4 l – 6 l – 9 l – 12 l – 15 l when used with an airbrush but can go up to 25l for heavy duty compressors. I would recommend buying a compressor with a tank if you have the budget for it.(see “Questions to ask yourself before buying a compressor”)

    Output Thread or outlet

    For tank-based compressors, the output thread is generally 1/4 “. For small dry piston compressors, it is more often 1/8 “.

    Auto-stop function

    this will allow you to set up the compressor to stop functioning when a specific air pressure is reached and to start again when the air pressure go down under specific pressure value. Very nice feature that will reduce the running time of the compressor and therefore also the motor wear.

    Questions to ask you before buying a compressor

    They are few questions you should ask yourself before buying a compressor:

    What Application?

    Do you need to paint large area? Then you will probably be better with a compressor with a tank. Small area? Paint on body? (You are going to need a compressor with air regulator to deliver very low air pressure) Nails? Spray cars?  Or even spray food coloring?

    The choice of your compressor will depend on of what you are going to do with it.

    If you are into illustrating, fine art, or if you need to paint a large area, I would recommend a compressor with a tank. You will able to paint continuously for a longer time with a consistent airflow. When the tank is full, the motor turns itself off, allowing it to rest.

    Same thing, you won’t be able to use a small tank-less compressor along with a 0,6 mm nozzle. It won’t be able to deliver that crucial constant a regular airflow that you need.

    If you are a make-up artist, painting body art, or you are into cake decorating, a compressor with a tank is not necessary. You will need something portable that can deliver low air pressure. Compressor such as Iwata Studio Series Ninja Jet would be suited for those applications.

    If you are planning to spray on textile T-shirts, you will need a compressor that delivers at least 40 psi and equipped with a tank. A model such as the Iwata Studio Series Power Jet Pro compressor would be suited for this.

    What about the compressor noise?

    Airbrush Compressor Noise

    Are you planning to spray on plastic models in the evening time when your kids are in the room next to you trying to go asleep? Is your wife watching TV in the next room? In that case, believe me, you should consider buying a silent compressor.

    Compressors that you can find in your local hardware shop can be very noisy. They can reach 85 or 90 decibels (dB), or more. It can be harmful to your hearing if you are exposed to that amount of noise for a long period of time.

    Thankfully, compressors for airbrush artists have the advantage to be much quieter than you average hardware shop compressor and some of them are even considered silent. Of course, such an advantage has also a drawback which is in that case, you have guessed right: the price! The can be quite expensive to buy.

    But if you have the means to do it, let me tell you won’t regret it.

    Silent airbrush compressors would be the pistons compressor describe below

    How long are you going to spray continuously for your project?

    Are you going to spray for 20 minutes or more? In that case, a compressor with a large tank will be required. Or are you only going to spray for a minute or 2? You may want to consider those three elements:

    Tank:

    Unless you are working on basic projects, or as mention before. unless you are into nail art, or if you are a makeup artist, I would always recommend a compressor with a tank. The bigger the tank, the more autonomy you will have.

    You will need to look at the air flow capacity and the duty cycle of the compressor.

    Air flow:

    If you are a Hobbit artist or art illustrator, I wouldn’t choose a compressor with less than 20 lpm (0.70 CFM). Those type of compressors would be more suited for application such as nail or body art, or makeup artists. For large jobs that require long continuous work, I would recommend a compressor with more than 30 lpm (1 CFM).

    Duty cycle:

    This is the amount of time the compressor is able to run continuously before having to stop to rest the motor.This will also avoid any damage done on the compressor and prolonged their life.The duty cycle is usually expressed in a percentage. A compressor with a duty cycle of 50% will run 30 minutes and then will need to rest 30 minutes to  cool down.

    9% Duty Cycle      5 Minutes On / 55  Cool-Down time
    10% Duty Cycle     6 Minutes On / 54 Coo-Down time
    15% Duty Cycle     9 Minutes On / 51  Cool-Down time
    20% Duty Cycle     12 Minutes On / 48 Cool-Down time

    Types of Airbrush Compressors

    There are two types of airbrush compressors

    -Diaphragm compressors

    diaphragm compressor

    They are often considered as beginner compressors and could be a good choice for you if you are just starting airbrushing. On those model of compressors, it is a pulsating membrane that compresses the air. The air pressure delivered by those compressors can generally reach a maximum of 40 psi. So they are suitable if you connect to them a single airbrush and would be fine if you are spraying on small plastic models for instance.

    Diaphragm compressors don’t have an air tank and run continuously when in use, so they can be noisy. Also, you should refrain using them continuously for too long, as they will overheat and can, therefore, be damaged.

    -Piston Compressors

    In those compressors, it is one or two pistons that compress the air. A two pistons compressor will compress a larger amount of air than a single piston compressor would.

    It is probably the type of compressor I would personally recommend you to use if you are planning to use it along with airbrush.

    Piston compressors are much more powerful than the diaphragm compressors. You could easily attach several airbrushes to a single compressor or run the compressor continuously longer than you would with a diaphragm compressor.

    An air regulator should be attached to the compressor in order to be able to control\restrict the air pressure before it reaches the air hose. Those air regulators are generally equipped also with a moisture trap that will help to filter fluids and particles from the compressed air line.

    There is two types of piston compressors:

    • Oil-filled piston:

    For me, they are the Royce of the silent compressor. Very quiet compressors as the oil is acting as a lubricant. So they are particularly well suited if noise is an issue for you. Ideal for illustrating or fine art, they will allow you to work and stay concentrated. You can compare the noise they do to the noise of a fridge. An oil filter must  also be attached between the air regulator\filter and the air hose. This will prevent any oil to go through your airbrush and mix with the paint (you definitely don’t want that!). Oil-filled piston needs a bit of maintenance as you need to check or sometimes replace the oil like in a car.

    • Oil-less piston:

    Iwata Smart Jet Plus Handle Tank Compressor

    Although a little bit less quiet than the oil-filled piston compressors, those are still very quiet if you compare them to diaphragm compressors. The main advantage though is that they are low maintenance (no oil check\change). Ideal for nail painting, body art or cake decorating as you can be sure no oil will mix with the air.

    If you want to start airbrushing, you are wondering what is the right airbrush setup for beginner you obviously need an airbrush to start with, but not only. An airbrush equipment list consist of few others elements, some of them absolutely necessary, some other more optional:  You will need an air-hose,  an air source (most likely a compressor), some paint and also something to paint (Minis, RC Car, T-Shirt, Plastic Model, Cake decorating..etc).

    There are also lots of airbrush accessories that will make you life easier for cleaning your airbrush. or to mixing your paint. And of course I want also to speak about airbrush safety, something that is very important and that you shouldn’t overlook.

    Here I am going to make a list of airbrush material that you will need to consider.

    The Airbrush

    Double action, single action, gravity feed or siphon feed, there is plenty of airbrushes to choose from out there.Each airbrush has different characteristics that would suit some application better than others.

    What am I going to paint?

    The airbrush is a fantastic tool can be used in numerous different arts going from model making, t-shit or shoe airbrushing, to cake decorating, illustration or even make up or nail art. What really matter here, I mean the question you should ask yourself when you start airbrushing is what are you going to use to for?What do you want to do with your airbrush? You won’t need the same type of airbrush whether you are going to airbrush t-shirts or if you are going to airbrush minis. Are you going to pain small surfaces, large surfaces? So first, make sure you identify the type of work you are going to do with your airbrush.

    Cheap Vs Branded Airbrush?

    I personally think that rather than buying a low end airbrush model, you should invest a bit more money and buy a quality airbrush from a reputable brand .That way, if you have an issue with a part (needle bent, damaged nozzle…) you will be able to order spare parts. Something you won’t be able to do if you buy a low end airbrush. I know some people think the opposite and are just fine using a cheap Chinese airbrush, but it is my personal view. Ultimately they are made of poor materials and will either brake or end up frustrating you and maybe even discourage you in your airbrushing journey. Well-known airbrush brand are for instance IWATA (Iwata-Medea Eclipse HP CS, Iwata Revolution, Iwata Neo), Badger (Badger patriot 105) or even Paashe (Paasche Talon) and Hannsa. Those brand offer a wide catalogue of quality products and an equally wide price range.

    The Air Source

    For your airbrush to work, you will need an air source to be able to spray. An adequate supply of air is a crucial factor to the performance of your airbrush. So before you start airbrushing, consider those different types of air source.

    Airbrush Air propellant cans:

    They are compact and silent but of limited capacity, so if you plan to spray quite often with your airbrush, this solution will become a very expensive one.

    You can probably only expect 10 to 15 min usage time with a airbrush air propellant can. So if you need to paint a lot, this is definitely not the cheapest solution.

    Airbrush air propellant can be use by airbrush beginners that want to learn how to airbrush but that don’t have the money yet to buy a compressor,

    If you are planning to paint models, you can expect an air propellant can to last for about 1 or 2 models depending on size/coverage/etc.

    I would rather advice to invest a bit more money in a compressor.

    CO2 Tanks:

    Co2 tanks can be refilled. They can operate at higher pressure than air propellant cans so an air regulator is essential. Good things about them is that they don’t require electric power and they are very silent.

    Co2 tank size

    The Co2 air tanks can be bought in different sizes: 5lb (pound) , 10 lb up to 100 lb Co2 air tank.

    If you are airbrushing plastic models or if you are a railway modeler, a 5 lb Co2 tanks should be enough.

    If you are airbrushing t-shirts, you will need to get a larger Co2 tank as  you are going to use more air.

    Co2 tank refill cost:

    You can find them in most hardware shop, paintball shop…before going that route, I would check the place in your area that can refill Co2 tanks. If you buy them online, they will be shipped empty (to avoid safety hazard) and you  will have to fill them or they can simply be  exchanged for full ones.

    You will probably pay between around $12 to $30 to refill a 5 lb Co2 tank

    How long would the Co2 tank last for?

    I would say that on average, with a 10 lb Co2 Tank, you will manage to paint 10 or 12 plastic models depending of the model size. In terms of times, a 10 lb tank will last about 10 hours of continuous airbrushing at 25-30 psi.

    If you are an t-shirt artist, you would expect to airbrush continuously  for 6 to 8 hours with a 20 lb Co2 tank running at 40-50 psi.

    Co2 tank safety precautions:

    Co2 can potential be dangerous. Because CO2 displaces oxygen, it is not recommended to airbrush in a confined environment with CO2 without fresh air ventilation. Without fresh air ventilation, the CO2 content will rise–at first making breathing difficult and making you very tired. Eventually you could pass out!Co2 tanks  should be carefully transported, and obviously you should avoid dropping them. They should be  securely chained or blocked  into position when you are using them or even preferably for storage.

    A Co2 tank for airbrush is portable, can be used if you need to work at an outside event for instance where electricity or noise could be an issue.

    But because of their size and weight, they wouldn’t really be an option for you if you want to work home .

     The medium

    The medium would be the type of color liquid material that can be sprayed with the airbrush. Typically, the medium would be paints, which could be watercolor paints, acrylic paints, oiled based paint, gouache, inks , urethane or even food coloring.

    They key point here when you start airbrushing is the use the correct combination of medium for the specific surface you are going to spray onto. You can spray on anything really: wood, on skin, on paper on canvas, but you need to ensure that the medium you use is compatible with the surface.

    All paints will have to be thinned to the proper consistency before going through the airbrush or else you might clog your airbrush. But thankfully, most paint manufacturers have a range of airbrush ready paints that won’t need to be thinned

    A Support

    You can really paint on all kind of support with an airbrush. You will just need to make sure that you use the right paint for that specific support. Some example of support can be:

    • Airbrushing t-shirt
    • Paper or cardboard
    • Wood
    • Automotive surfaces
    • Airbrushing on leather
    • Railway models
    • Skin
    • Cake

    Other Accessories

    There are also other accessories that you should consider when you start airbrushing. Some are optional and can be bought at a later time but some other are really a must I should be purchased along with your airbrush.

    An Air Hose

    The air hose is one of those  airbrush equipment that you will have to get. The hose helps connect your airbrush to your air source, likely your airbrush compressor.

    Make sure your hose is long enough to cover the distance between you compressor and were you want to use your airbrush.

    Also make sure that the airbrush brand you fits your hose or-else you will need to purchase an adapter.

    Without going into too much details because this could be the subject of a full article, there are different standards in terms of threads size depending of your geographical location:

    • NPT (National Pipe Taper)  is standard for pipe fittings   in the U.S whereas
    • BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the U.K. standard for pipe fittings.

    BSP  threads are a bit smaller than the NPT threads so you could screw an 1/8 BSP male into an 1/8 NPT female.But you will need a good bit of Teflon tape on top of it to secure the connection and avoid any air leaks.

    Master, Iwata, harder & steenbeck  or Grex airbrushes use 1/8″ BSP connection, whereas Badger, Paasche and Aztek airbrushes, use their own  proprietary thread size.

    Badger airbrushes have  male M5 0.5 mm thread size, Aztek uses M3 0.3 mm thread size and Paasche  uses  approximately M7 1.0 mm  thread size.

    Beware that in the US most compressor  use 1/4″ NPT as an outlet and they often come  with a 1/4″ NPT hose for the compressor.

    So lets take that following scenario: You have a Badger airbrush along with a compressor from an US hardware shop with a 1/4” outlet and you wonder what sort of hose you should get:

    In that case you would need to get  an air hose with 1/4 inch one end and 1/8 inch the other end and buy the Badger Co. 51-042 Quick Disconnect Coupler  to connect it to your airbrush. With this Quick disconnect coupler, there is a 1/8” to Badger adapter on the female disconnect making it possible to connect it to any any standard 1/8” airbrush hose.

    Or you could just use a badger hose instead, with the same  Badger Co. 51-042 Quick Disconnect Coupler to connect your airbrush.

    Air filter and moisture trap:

    It is essential that clean and dry air goes through your airbrush in order to protect your project work. You can buy them cheap enough. Some moisture trap can be connected to the compressor, other can be connected directly to the hose. Without a inline moisture trap, condensation  can build up in the line and shoot through your airbrush directly onto you model, minis or whatever you are working on. . This moisture will over-dilute your paint and ultimately could ruin your paint job!

    An air regulator:

    Ideally you will want to be able to set up the air pressure exactly the way you want. Can be very important for instance if you are a make-up artist as you will spray directly onto someone face.

    The quick  Release(disconnect):

    This is a very popular items that is not absolutely necessary but that is SO useful. It’s purely a luxury but I can only highly recommend it. The quick release system  allows you to quickly disconnect your airbrush from   from your airbrush hose.

    You can use the quick disconnect to connect the  compressor to the hose, hose to filter/regulator, and filter/regulator to airbrush hose connections.

    The quick release system is great for swapping between airbrushes quickly and easily. Also ideal for connecting airbrushes with different thread sizes to one hose system.

    The way it works is very simple: it is a spring-loaded mechanism that allows the male end (called the tail) to detached from the female end. The female end is attached to the airbrush hose  and the male end is attached to the airbrush. The other good thing about this quick release system it allows the airbrush to swivels helping to eliminate hose kinks.

    Stencils:

    In airbrushing, when using a stencils you call this frisketing. You use stencils or  frisket film for masking certain area of your work while airbrushing. If most of your work is going to be freehand, it is always nice to have some generic stencils for circle or curved shapes for instance.

    Airbrush Tools:

    Hobby knife:

    You might want to inverts in a set of hobby knife or cutting knife. They help to get precise, detailed cuts on a wide variety of light to medium weight materials. Those hobby blades are used for delicate, precision cutting, detailing, trimming and stripping.

    Cutting mat:

    A cutting mat is also something that you should consider, especially if you are into model making.A cutting mat provides a long-lasting, non-glare surface that can be cut and slashed constantly without showing marks or cutting lines. This will save you from damaging the table you are working on.

    Airbrush pipettes

    Airbrush pipettes are great to transfer small quantities of paint into the airbrush cup. If you don’t use a pipette, pouring paint from the pot to the airbrush cup can be very messy. Plus you will waste paint.You can lso use them for mixing or thinning your paint so that you know exactly the quantity of fluid you add.

From the basic Q-tips , pipes cleaners, cleaning  brush set to the appropriate cleaning agent that correspond to the type of paint you are using, there are quite a few things you need to think about.

    If you are using water based or acrylic paints you might use the Iwata-Medea Airbrush Cleaner. I recommend that you use this along with the Iwata-Medea Cleaning station or the Iwata-Medea Universal Spay Out Pot. The cleaning station is basically a closed container  with a little rubber hole in which you insert the airbrush nozzle to spray. It also has handle to hold the airbrush. So you can spray in this container and avoid messing up your work place with the over spray.

    Like it is in most companies nowadays, health and safety is an important factor to consider especially when it is your own health you are talking about! When spraying paints you might inhale particles that can be harmful for your lungs.

    For example, if you are planning to airbrush leather dye, you absolutely need to buy a proper airbrush respirator. You are going to atomize a poisonous dye that can do some serious damage if it gets into your lungs .

    To protect yourself from the over-spray, use a proper airbrush respirator.This is true also if you use solvent,enamel or lacquer paint. Make sure the face respirator offers a protection from organic vapors (all the nasty chemicals).

    Don’t think that using a face mask, like a simple dust mask , will protect you effectively from the over-spay. They are pretty much useless. Get your self a proper airbrush respirator, simple as that.

    Those airbrush respirators have a full mouth and noise cover that create a proper seal around you mouth and noise.They also have filters that you can replace.Watch out thought because some model are disposable  and other are reusable (you replace the filters). You will be amazed by the amount of paint that those filters will catch when you replace them

    Airbrush Booth Kit:

    Ideal to avoid messing up the area where you are planning to spray with your airbrush. Although you could make one yourself with cardboard, you might be interested by some ready to buy Spray boot Kit that not only with avoid messing up but have other features like   their own ability to extract and control the mist , turn table etc…
