A cordless paint sprayer is a handheld tool used to quickly spray paint or other coatings (water paint, stains, Acrylics, Enamels…) on all kinds of surfaces.
Cordless paint sprayer is a piece of equipment that allows you to save a LOT of time compare to the traditional rollers and paintbrushes.

What to look for buying the best cordless paint sprayer
To find the best cordless paint sprayer that will fit you needs, you need to think about the type of paint jobs you want to do. Cordless Paint sprayer are more suited to small paint jobs, but they are different types of cordless paint sprayers, with different technologies, features, prices etc…..In my list above, you can find the Graco Cordless Airless sprayer that are more expensive and also some more affordable HVLP cordless sprayer. But which one is suited for you?
Buying Considerations for a Cordless Paint Sprayer
✔️ Cordless Airless paint sprayers:
A cordless airless sprayers like the Graco Ultra and Quickshoot work by pressurizing the paint(using that pressurized pump that can be replaced) and forcing it through a small orifice nozzle\tip at high pressure, atomizing it into tiny droplets. Think about the times where you put your thumb at the end of your garden hose to spray water….well that’s the same principle. They don’t require air compression like HVLP sprayers. They operate at high pressure, allowing for faster and more even paint application. They would be quicker, faster than an HVLP paint sprayer. High pressure also mean that they can handle thicker paint and heavy coating like primer and latex paints without having to thin the material. However, Airless sprayer are are bit more difficult to control due to the high pressure. If working with a large tip, you will create also more overspray. This can be overcome though by pairing a small tip size with an airless sprayer in order to increase atomization and transfer efficiency without wasting paint.
✔️ HVLP Cordless paint sprayers: These paint sprayers use a high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) compressor or turbine to atomize paint. They’re not as fast as airless sprayers, but they deliver a smooth, concentrated finish, so there’s not a lot of wasted paint. HVLP paint sprayers are a great choice for small projects like furniture, radiators, doors etc… HVLP Cordless sprayer provides you with more control over the paint flow and coating thickness. You can essentially dial in the perfect spray pattern for a smooth finish every time. Somewhat similar results can be achieved with an airless sprayer, but only if you’re using the right fine finish spray tip. Because HVLP cordless paint sprayer works with low pressure, paint material need to be properly thinned in order to avoid clogging the unit. They are usually not suited to thick varnishes and lacquers.
✔️ Flow rate/power : Cordless Paint sprayer differ in the level of pressure they can operate at. The heavier is your paint or whatever material you want to spray, the higher pressure you are going to need. Speed also has an important role to play in your choice. The higher the power, the higher the flow rate (ml/min) and the faster the spraying speed. Cordless Airless sprayers operate at a much higher pressure than HVLP cordless paint sprayers. The Graco models can operate up to 2000 psi, making it easy to spray thick materials without clogging the spray gun.
✔️Tip or Nozzle size: The tip or nozzle size of the cordless paint sprayer will have an impact on how much paint can be release from the tip. Larger tip size will have a larger spray pattern and accommodate thicker paint, whereas smaller tip size will be more precise but need to be used with well diluted materials. So look up for the type of tips that are included with the Cordless paint sprayer you are planning to buy and make sure it is suited for the jobs you have in hand.
✔️ Size and capacity: Cordless Paint sprayer are suited for small size projects like painting furniture, cabinets, doors. Most of those cordless spray comes with a 1l cup (or near 1 l) So really it is the size of your project that determines what size and capacity you should look for. For large projects like exterior walls or large fences, look for a larger sprayer like the Graco X7 or.Graco X19.You don’t have to stop and refill constantly as you can spray directly from 1 or 5 gallons paint containers.
✔️Cordless Sprayer weight: Cordless sprayer are portable and can be carried easily where you need them. When choosing the best cordless paint sprayer for you, keep in mind that you need to add the weight of the paint in the cup to the weight of the sprayer.Make sure you have the arm strength to hold the tool up, especially if you are painting ceilings, high walls, or hard-to-reach spots.
✔️ Paint type: If you know the kind of paint you’ll want to use, that will determine the type of paint sprayer that will work best for you. Airless models tend to be the most versatile, working with oil and latex paints, as well as stains, varnishes and lacquers. Many HLVP models can’t handle viscous liquids, so varnishes and lacquers are out, and thick latex paints need to be thinned before use.
✔️ Accessories: This is another factor that can separates top-of-the-line sprayers from others. Check the numbers of tips the prayer comes with, number of spare batteries if any, possiblity to buy larger cup or of the unit comes with cleaning tools.
Tips on using a paint sprayer
Using an electric paint sprayer is actually quite simple, but before you start spraying, read the user manual and review all the safety precautions for your particular model. Be sure to properly prepare the surfaces you are going to paint and protect anything you do not want to spray. Follow these tips below and you’ll be well on your way to painting success.
Practice first
If you are new to using a paint sprayer , it will certainly take some practice time to become familiar with the spraying techniques that produce the best quality finish. I would advice to practice first using water. Choose a training area such as a garage door or large piece of cardboard, or any flat surface that can be safely sprayed with water. When using water, follow the procedures outlined in your painting tool’s manual. Once the unit and gun are primed with water, engage the gun trigger safety and install the spray tip and tip guard. Next, practice your spray technique on your chosen practice area. Select the best pressure setting
Select the best pressure setting
Locate and use the pressure control knob to adjust the spray pressure for a good quality spray. When the pressure is set correctly, there should be no jerkiness in the pattern and the pattern itself will be smooth. Before painting on the actual surface, test the spray pattern on pieces of cardboard. Start with a low pressure setting and activate the gun quickly. If the jet is full, you are ready to spray. In most cases, however, the spray pattern will not be full the first time. For example, a gap may exist at each end of the pattern, or the edges of the pattern may appear thicker than the middle. If the jet is not full, increase the pressure setting slightly and test again. Continue this process of increasing the pressure setting and testing until the desired pattern is achieved.
Tips for successful spraying
The following guidelines will help you to learn good spraying techniques in order to produce uniform coverage and a quality finish.
- Keep a consistent spray distance:
Start by familiarizing yourself with moving the cordless paint sprayer and learn to maintain the recommended distance from the surface. When spraying, hold the gun about 30 cm away and perpendicular to the surface you are going to paint.
Move your arm while keeping the gun pointed straight at the surface to be painted.
Do not tilt the gun, as this can cause an uneven finish. Instead, flex your wrist slightly at the beginning and end of each shot to maintain proper gun position.
- Work within your reach:
When spray painting, only work in the area that you can easily reach while maintaining proper gun position.
- Proper Spray Gun Triggering:
To avoid excess waste at the beginning and end of each shot, always move the gun before pulling the trigger and continue your spray after releasing the trigger.
