Baking Airbrush kit Buyer’s guide: Choosing the best airbrush for cake decorating:

Before you jump ahead and buy a airbrush gun for cake decorating, there are few things you need to consider.

Cake decoration as a hobby or to make money?

The answer to that question will determine which type of compressor you should go for:

  • Are you planning to use your baking airbrush kit at home once or twice a month to decorate you own cakes,cookies or pastries?

Are you a real beginner and you want something easy to use, light and easy to put away. Then you could buy one of those baking airbrush kit that come with a compact mini compressor. Those small compressors are diaphragm compressors that can’t run continuously for too long as they will overheat and get damaged.  But they will work perfectly for small 20 minutes burst.  Look for compressor with a way to regulate the pressure. A good small compressor  from a cake decorating kit have a way to adjust the air pressure, usually a knob for low, medium or high pressure.   • If you plan is to create a business and make money decorating cakes, cookies or pastries

Then you need to buy a baking airbrush kit a with larger compressor. They will allow you to work continuously for a longer time. Also, those compressors are equipped with an air regulator,a pressure gauge, and moisture trap that remove any moisture that builds up in the compressor air line(ideal if you live in hot and humid climate).

The pressure gauge allow you to control how much air the compressor is feeding through the hose. For cake decorating, you will work with low air pressure. So if you setup the air pressure on the compressor at 30 psi, you know that the air pressure won’t go past that value. Therefore, you will avoid the air pressure being too high, and the colors to bead on the surface of your cake, or even to create dents in the icing, especially if the icing is soft.

There are a lot of different types of airbrushes out there and each one is better suited for specific applications.There is few things that you need to consider before buying an airbrush for cake decorating.   • With a single action airbrush, when you press the triggers, it delivers both the air and the medium, here the food coloring

  • The more you press the trigger or the further back you pull the trigger  , the more color will be sprayed.
  • Ideal for larger area.
  • The advantage of a single action airbrush is that it is easy to use for a beginner as you don’t need to worry about the airflow. Also, it is usually cheaper than a dual action airbrush.

  • With a double action airbrush, the airflow is controlled by pressing the airbrush trigger and the color  flow is controlled by pulling the same trigger back.
  • A double action airbrush is more versatile and offers more control over the spray pattern than a single action airbrush would.

  • The control is important if you want to do more than just  spray a background.
  • A double action airbrush is a bit more difficult to use when you are a beginner.

It is important to protect  the surrounding area from airbrush color when working at decorating a cake. If you are at home, you can use some cardboard and build an enclosure where you can work without messing up your entire kitchen.

Airbrush cleaning station

An airbrush cleaning station  is a very practical piece. It has two functions:

  • The main one is that it allows you  to clean your airbrush without any overspray . When you have a bit of color left in the cup, just insert your airbrush in the cleaning station and press the trigger to purge the remaining content. Same if you want to clean your brush after you have finish decorating your cake. Insert water in the cup and spray into the cleaning station.Some people put a piece of paper towel inside the station to limit the amount of mist coming out from the top of the cleaner. Just remove it after each session.
  • It can also be used as an airbrush holder on your countertop which is very practical.

Without this cake lifter, even moving your cake from cooling rack to a plate can be risky, since the cake can crack if it’s not well supported.

This cake lifter solves the problem, with a 10-inch diameter surface that’s large enough to support most cakes or cake layers. The nonstick surface helps the lifter slide easily under the cake, and it allows the cake to slide off onto its final destination. For sticky cakes, a light spray of oil on the lifter can make it even easier for the cake to slide on and off. The angle of the handle is designed to give you good leverage to lift the cake and the handle material provides a secure grip.

Experts Cake decorating tips for beginners:

Here I will give you some  cake decorating tips from me but also from some of the biggest cake decorating experts.

Safety tip first:

  • Avoid contamination and always use your airbrush with food safe, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved colors.
  • Make sure you never use an airbrush for foods after it has been used for non-edible media such as paint.
  • Of course you can use the compressor from any of those airbrush decorating kits with other project,like nail painting or Airbrush makeup for instance with the smaller compressors, but also model making or illustrating art with the bigger ones.

Airbrush spray pattern

  • The further you are away from the cake, the wider the spray. The closer you are when you airbrush, the finer the linesDawn Butler
  • Also, the closer you are from the cake with your airbrush the darker the color of shading will be.
  • As a rule of thumb, try to hold your airbrush at least six inches away from the cake or cookie to have blotch-free designs.
  • Spraying with the nozzle at a 45° angle will produce broad, softer lines. Hold the nozzle at a 90° angle for a sharper, more defined line
  • Working in circular motions helps you to achieve even coverage
  • Back and forth movements should only be made if you are able to work on and off your object, like when using a stencil.
  • Keep the airbrush nice and steady, make sure the colour cup stays uprightEmma Ball

Airbrush Tips when using Stencils

  • Always keep moving the airbrush just so that you are not staying in one positionPaul Bradford Sugarcraft
  • When airbrushing stencils, make sure you hold your airbrush in a 90 degree angle.
  • Careful when using water base colors with stencils: Stencils get saturated very quickly and color will drop down from them (under spray).
  • Keep going back and forward so that you are building up the layers

Airbrush food coloring types

Water based food coloring:

  • Water based food coloring is cheaper than ethanol based food coloring.
  • You can only ever airbrush water base color onto sugar paste.

Ethanol based food coloring

  • If you are dealing with anything else than sugar paste then you need to use ethanol based food coloring
  • Ethanol will dry straight away when  airbrushed: So because ethanol completely evaporate when you airbrush ethanol based colors,  you can use ethanol based colors on chocolate or buttercream, ganache without any problem. The color comes out dry

First impression:Badger Krome Review

Renegade Krome Box 2

The Badger Renegade Krome comes in a very nice black and aluminium storage case with reinforced steel corners.  As I already mention in my other Badger Airbrush reviews, I like having boxes to store my Airbrushes and keep my working area tidy.

The Badger Renegade Krome comes 3/8-ounce mounted colour cup, a spare needle and nozzle. It comes with a protective rubber cap for the needle and a metal lid for the cup this time rather than the plastic one that comes with the Badger Patriot 105 for instance.

In the box you can also find a hose adapter to fit with a standard 1/4″ hose and spray regulators for the two types of needle.

The Badger Renegade looks very nice with its finished (as opposed to the Renegade Velocity gunmetal finished), all parts are well manufactured, and it feels very comfortable and also well balanced in hands.

Cleaning and maintenance:

Careful cleaning and maintenance of your airbrush is essential if it is to continue to work effectively. I will always recommend to dismantle and lubricate your airbrush before the first use.

Krome Parts List

The Renegade Krome has a cut out handle on the back that will allow you to remove the needle without taking the handle off. I like this feature from the Badger Airbrush that make the cleaning and the maintaining much easier, saving you some precious time that you will be using to work on your project instead!

I really feel that taking apart  the badger Renegade Krome won’t cause you any trouble. All the airbrush’s parts are just to be finger tight to work to perfection. No need of plier or any other tool.

Please take extra attention though while dismantling/amassing the Airbrush not to lose the tiny little spout /paint tip. The part is very tiny and can easily be lost.

The extra fine needle will allow you to produce very fine lines, as thin as an hair all the way down to 1/1000ths of an inch! If you blend your paint property, the Badger Renegade Krome will produce very thin lines. Ideal for detailed work or for weathering if you are into model painting.

The Badger Renegade Krome has a needle limiter with graduate markings collar with a set screw that will allow you to adjust the needle position by tightening or untightening it. You won’t need to worry about pulling the trigger back too far with this feature.

The Badger Renegade Krome Airbrush performs realy like the original Renegade Airbrush as far as the spraying capabilities, which is superb really. If you are looking for an airbrush that will allow you to spray some great details, I can only recommend this airbrush id for you.

This is an excellent airbrush

Yet another great Airbrush from the Badger Company. I have personally own a Renegade Velocity for many years and I must say that I could not be happier with it. I was really curious to see how the Krome could possibly surpassed it. The answer is that Badger has managed to create an airbrush at a very affordable price that has managed to keep all the Velocity strong points, but also have managed to take into consideration user’s feedback to improve the airbrush even further, especially with the new trigger system.
Overall, I am particularly happy with this badger Krome Airbrush and I can only highly recommend it to you.
